Coach Steve Klosterman

A passion and love for the sport of volleyball

and teaching

About Me

I love to coach volleyball, a sport I took to like fish to water at a very early age. I've been fortunate to have played and won on some of the biggest stages of the game, all over the world. I have won four championship MVPs -NCAA, -Puerto Rico's Superior League - and am the only back-to-back 18s JO's MVP. I have been on five USAVB national teams starting at age 14.

All of this exposed me to some of the very finest coaches in the world, paramount is the renowned Al Scates of UCLA, winner of 19 NCAA Championships where I was honored to have been on his winning 19th NCAA Championship team in 2006, and was a two-time All American and four-year starter. I also played under current USA National Team Head Coach John Speraw as a member of the USA Jr. National Team. I also trained for half a year under then Olympic USAV head coach Hugh McCutcheon. I've also played internationally for an eight-year professional career that took me to Paris France, The Czech Republic, Toulouse France, Dubai, Finland, Qatar, Puerto Rico, and even Vietnam and Egypt. All of these experiences have provided a wealth of coaching knowledge that proves invaluable to me in my coaching career today. I've studied under some of the very best in the sport.

I have coached nearly all levels of the sport and both genders. Before joining the staff at Hofstra I was on the coaching staff at Loyola of Chicago Women. I have also coached collegiately at UCLA Men. I have coached club teams for over twelve years in elite club programs in both hotbeds of the sport in Southern California and in Chicago, and here at Hofstra's club program in Long Island. I have also been a head coach at three high schools.

I am a player's coach. I consider myself to be an excellent technical skills coaches. As a player my position was Opposite, usually considered the most athletic position due to the need to fly through the air to get to back sets. I teach individual and team technique that's often missed by many. I've been labeled a strategic coach who is a VB perfectionist when it comes to understanding the game's strategic nuances.

As a teen, my club teams won an unprecedented three JO's Golden Open National Championships in a row, as a 17, and two as an 18. My first professional team was the renowned Naranjito Changos of the Puerto Rican Superior League, where we won it all and I was honored to be named the MVP of the Championships in my rookie year. I find that players at all levels respect and relate to these accomplishments, and vice verse. It's invaluable in my abilities to communicate with them, and with their families.

These experiences have given me unique recruiting and coaching exposure that I love to share with players and watch as they reach their true potentials.

Some of my favorite John Wooden quotes I relate to volleyball:

“The best competition I have is against myself to become better."

“A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.”

“In the end, it’s about the teaching, and what I always loved about coaching was the practices. Not the games, not the tournaments, not the alumni stuff. But teaching the players during practice was what coaching was all about to me.”

...and lastly

“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
